Internationally acclaimed and sometimes even infamous, Sulayman Al Bassam is the Gulf’s most renowned playwright. “The work I make questions prejudices and a priori positions both from an Arab-Islamic perspective and from a Western secular perspective,” he explains. Active around the world, Sulayman hopes to see changes to the technical and social infrastructure of Kuwait’s cultural landscape that will allow young Kuwaiti artists to shine. “I admire their patience and determination,” he says. “Things are changing.”
